Every year, we do a Christmas card for our clients.
It’s usually an agency-wide competition, where the best design is chosen to be printed.
That’s all well and good. And don’t get us wrong; we’ve done some lovely cards over the years.
But the more we thought about it, the more it didn’t seem right. At least not for us.
We’re who we are as an agency because of our people.
That’s to say, a collective group of individuals.
So to have only one idea be representive of the whole didn’t seem right.
It doesn’t tell our story.
Which is why, this year, we’ve made a book.
Christmas by Refinery started life as a post on our intranet.
We asked our staff what they’d include in a book about Christmas.
The response we got we never could’ve anticipated.
Everything from ‘make your own reindeer dust’ to ‘a colouring in page’ (despite no children working here).
These ideas were then passed on to our creatives.
The brief was to create a book full of our staff’s festive responses, brought to life in the most imaginative, Christmassy way possible.
Needless to say, they had an absolute field day.
They worked before working hours, during lunch, overtime, and on the weekends to perfect hand-drawn typography, illustrations, cartoons, writing, playlists and gifs, to name a few.
The result is something quite magical.
It’s the most beautiful, most festive, Christmas not-card we’ve ever made.
But more importantly than that, it’s a true reflection of what we believe our biggest strength is: collaboration.
We’ve made good Christmas cards before.
Christmas by Refinery is what happens when you put lots of good things together, and together, make something great.
